Solar Energy for Remote Hospital in South Sudan

2/09/2024 / South Sudan
Providing medical care poses challenges for countries like South Sudan, where two thirds of the population has no access to electricity. A 120 kWp PV system keeps medical equipment running at St. Teresa Hospital Nzara. Nzara Hospital provides medical care for general, maternal, child, and infant patients.
Since 2016, a PV-Genset system, which combines a photovoltaic system with diesel generators, has been used to power the hospital’s operating theaters and other medical equipment. Due to the increased demands of a growing population, an expansion of the PV-Genset system became necessary in 2023. The upgrade was supported by the non-profit organisation Friends of St. Theresa Nzara FSTTN, who approached Fronius and Australian installer MODE Electrical for support. In an amazing team effort, they were able to double the output of the hospital’s PV system.

Remote location the biggest challenge

“The biggest challenge was definitely the remote location of Nzara Hospital. In addition to the logistical challenges, the remoteness requires a very well thought-out system design and careful selection of components,” says Simon Dingemanse of MODE Electrical, regarding his experiences in Nzara. The town is more than eight hours’ drive from the capital, Juba, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. South Sudan has a population of just under 11 million, and only a third of them have access to electricity. All of which makes it difficult to provide medical care – and to install a PV system.

» Because we’ve been working with Fronius for more than 15 years, we have confidence in their products and their ability to achieve the desired results. «

“Fronius is the clear choice”

Nevertheless, MODE Electrical was keen to implement the project. It was clear to the installer that only an exceptionally robust system of the highest quality would be able to ensure the hospital’s power supply for many years to come and prevent outages. Simon Dingemanse explains why Fronius was chosen: “Because we’ve been working with Fronius for more than 15 years, we have confidence in their products and their ability to achieve the desired results. The proven quality, good reputation and expert support made Fronius the clear choice for the PV inverters.”
